Roon is not a “buget” solution (cost is 150$ per year) - whether you use Roon or any other application is really a matter of personal preference. There are a number of free applications available (MPD, LMS, UPNP Servers), which can run on similar systems.
Best audio quality is achieved by using a 2 PC setup, seperating Roon “Server” from the “player”.
Roon server does require some processing power. I have installed it on an Intel I5 fanless computer with SSD & 8GB Ram, running Ubuntu Server. My music library fits on a SSD (as it essentially consists of albums not available through streaming services).
